I know the published sectional timings can sometimes be taken with a grain of salt, due to them being too good to be true. But if they are correct for Star's race last Friday night (and they do seem to be credible) then they are something to be proud of. He ran the fastest last 800m in 55.8 sec, equal fastest last 400m in 27.6 sec, and the fastest last mile in 1:55.5 - not bad for a newbie "free-legger".... cheers

Hi Des. I also noticed the error in the stewards report from last Friday night and advised HRNZ, so they have amended this now.
I won't be going to the Breeders Crown this year, but I'm sure you'll have a good time.

A very nice performance by Major Star with 55.8 last half and being the only horse who ran wide in the last lap. The stewards report has confused the two Mangos runners saying that Major Star had no clear racing room in the run home. Hopefully this is the start of the new, old Major Star. I am going to the Breeders Crown at Ballarat and Melton at the end of the month. Does anyone using this forum intend to be there?

That was an impressive run tonight that made the commentators sit up and take notice. He was last at the 600m mark, ran four wide around the final bend and then ran down the outside to finish a close up 4th. He appeared to be tractable and focused and showed no sign of breaking gait under pressure. If it was going to be an issue then it would have come to light tonight as it was a fast run race in 2 min 41 sec.
I look forward to his next race which is likely to be in two weeks time on the 14th.

Some interesting free legged pacers ...
Astronomical ... free legged world record 1:50 in Canada.
Justasip ... won at Geraldine ... Jan 31st 2015
Avonnova ... raced free legged in 2014 Miracle Mile.
Go Major Star - run free and enjoy.

Exciting news, Ray.

Robalan and Final Decision were a couple I remember which weren't bad without the hopples.

Will make a good talking point for the Trackside boys.

A mighty impressive win by Star at the Pukekohe workouts today, running free legged.
A 5 horse field and he was driven by Simon Lawson as Brent Mangos was driving Vibhuti, who ran second.
Times of approx 57 seconds for the last 800m with the final 400m in 27.5 so Star stayed in his gait whilst under pressure.
I understand that Star may be starting at Alex Park this coming Friday night and may well run free legged.

Wow, free-legging him. I like the innovative approach. Lets hope it improves Star's mental attitude as it gives him something more to think about keeping himself in gait rather than relying on the hopples.

Good to see Brent trying something different. Hopefully the " no hopples" will make him a happy horse again.
Thanks for that update, nealclan.

Franklin on Saturday 11th July he went to trails only this time he had no hopples on he was free legged. Brent was pleased with him even though he did not push him. He is happy and more like the horse used to be. He has grown and put condition on looks good and sounds like goods things to come

He did go down to Cambridge on Saturday and a third horse was added to the workout field.
There is no video available online so we can only rely upon the HRNZ published results and the comments from those that were in attendance which were that they ran along in Indian file for much of the race with Vibhuti leading, then Star, and Electric Chapel and that they finished in this order.
Good last 800m and last 400m times.

Race 4 PACE. (C1 & faster)
Distance: 2200m     Weather: Fine     Track: Fast
Plc Bk Horse Hcap Time Driver Trainer
1 2 Vibhuti fr 2-53.0 B M Mangos B M Mangos
2 1 Major Star fr B D Butcher (J) B M Mangos
3 3 Electric Chapel fr G C Small

Margins: 1 1/4 lengths, 2 lengths
Times: Mile Rate: 2-06.5 Last 800m: 56.9 Last 400m: 27.6

There are only 2 horses in the heat and both are trained by Brent Mangos.
Will he go all that way or will he fast work the two horses at home?? - we will have to wait and see......

Brent Mangos very happy with Stars run last night and felt he would have finished closer except for the early interference as he would have been closer in the running to Bettor Sprits, who was able to control the race and sprint a quick last half. Star battled the last bit but should be improved by the run.

A reasonable run for 4th. from 20 metres behind,  considering early interference and fresh up.
Stipes report:-

MAJOR STAR after beginning well looked to improve inside the breaking runners however was checked by the galloping CULLIES DELIGHT. MAJOR STAR broke from its gait and was inconvenienced losing approximately 20 metres.

Had a very quiet run at the workouts last week which should help to tune him up for tonight's assignment.
It is hard to get a read as to whether or not he is a winning prospect but if he was to return to his best form, he would cruise in easily. confused

Major Star to commence another racing prep

Post by ray the beancounter on Tue Mar 31, 2015 11:02 pm

Lining up on Thursday evening at Cambridge as he starts another racing prep after a short break.
Will be interesting to see how he goes first up, but will be a lot easier than when he raced fresh up in December and did some incredible times, but which left him totally flattened.
The biggest problem for syndicate members will be contending with the Easter weekend traffic whilst trying to get to Cambridge. Suggestion leave really really early - a departure time of about 6pm Wednesday should be about right....... lol!
