Thought Star was maybe getting a bit tired after a not so good performance last week but was back to business this week with yet another bold finish from his usual too far back at the straight entrance possie.Yet another change of drivers Barryf ,yes not perhaps a great strategy.
See Luke McCarthy was on favourite Benicio, thought that was a sure thing but was way out there, dam poor run.Nice to see old Change Gear still capable of a good mile and more wins.

Geejay , I wish they would settle on a regular driver as he seems to have a new one most races- and usually a "Jcl" at that.  He's probably not the easiest horse to drive either  as he does best when restrained early, but recently he has been so far back that he has had too much ground to make up.
Good to see him putting in his best work at the finish though and at least the drivers are not doing any of those "spectacular" ( and silly) moves around the field which has some times happened in the past.

Another strong race by Star, closing strongly yet again for a close up 4th,this time in a 1:51:1 mile,be interesting to know his time and closing sectional in this race, time to bury the lost speed myth !
Entered in 2 2300m races saturday night at Menangle ,hoping this time he takes the latter stronger and better stake race as he gets the 1 draw opposed to 12 in the earlier race though a chance of getting buried on pegs may sway the decision.

1.52,4 mile round his limit so never got into the race from his too often last possie from the wide draw.Scratched from the stronger group 3 race later in the program where he had a much better draw and that was won by Code Black, in 1.52,0 ,who beat him narrowly last start.Wrong race choice ?

Yes another good run by Star, dunno about the driver, never heard of him but I see he got a couple of wins after Star's race so he must be pretty useful.Star had the opportunity to grab the 1/1 at the start but may have been his poorish gate speed rather than his driver that he had to settle 3 back. That probably cost him dearly at the business end.Great to see he back to swishing his tail and no longer pulling madly ,def kudo's to this trainer and saving him for one run working well, certainly finishing of his races better than ever.

A good run by Star in a Group 3 race last night and a creditable fifth placing from an awkward draw which had him taken back at the start and then having to make a run 4 wide around the final bend.
Would a more experienced driver have made a difference – maybe…..

Another superb run by the horse "which had lost its speed"- 1m52.4 mile rate suggests he has regained it. I thought he had nabbed it on the line but photo decided otherwise. Kudos to the current trainer and driver .

Yet another great performance by Major Star today at Menangle. Beaten a nose by the highly rated All Black Stride who led and ran 55.7 last 800 with Major Star coming from midfield at the top of the straight so he went considerably faster. Mile rate 1:52.4.

Just watched the race and yes Des was a great run by him, closing fast at the end from well back, got to be very encouraging for the new owners.Trainer seems to be getting him sorted and these new drivers do have him more relaxed.See it was Todd McCarthy that beat him,had all favours though.
If those times you mentioned are right then this must tell us he in top form, wonder if they prepared to put him in a claimer again anytime soon.

Major Star ... great run for a fast closing second from last at the 800 and top of the straight. Leader (winner) ran 55.3 for last 800 so Major Star went about 54 or high 53 for last 800 and mid 25 for last 400. May be finally showing the racing keenness to match his potential.

In Saturday ,M21 R3 MENANGLE HARNESS (NSW) Menangle
ALLIED EXPRESS MOBILE PACE Pacers MOB. PACE ( R) 1609m $14,000
See Todd McCarthy gone of him to drive Blazin N Cullen and Blake Fitzpatrick takes the reins, stepup in class so be interesting to see how he goes, will need to get away from the gate reasonably well I would think.

The NZ records for 2 year olds over 1700 metres are as follows:

Alta Maestro 23/03/2017 Cambridge Raceway 1-59.7
More The Better 04/03/2016 Alexandra Park 2-00.0
Five Card Draw 09/03/2012 Alexandra Park 2-02.5
Fly Like An Eagle 11/03/2011 Alexandra Park 2-02.5
Charge Forward 11/03/2010 Forbury Park 2-02.6

Park Avenue ran 2:01.9 in his first serious attempt at a race so sits very well amongst the better 2 year olds.

Agree Ray Todd McCarthy doing well driving him and does seem more relaxed. Was a very good win, company not strong but time was good, his best winning milerate in his career,as you say Des,not bad for a horse that had supposedly lost some of his speed in NZ.
Australia sure has plenty of opportunities for him and he seems to be thriving there.Though not high stakes these last 2 races it soon adds up.With such a difference between winning stakes and place stakes probably makes sense racing him in easier fields when poss though would like to see him in stronger races, just those starts can be a bit of a negative for him.

Park Avenue does look an exciting prospect going forward ,look forward to following his progress and hopefully see him in the jewells next year. Wave

Driven by Todd McCarthy in his last two races and Star appears to relax a lot better in his races with Todd in the bike. A drop in grade from what he was racing recently and he is thriving. A very good 1:52.3 mile rate, I just hope that he can back up and race competitively again on Saturday.

As regards Park Avenue he is still a work in progress and is as green as grass but he sure as hell has a big motor under the bonnet. A 1:55 mile rate over 1700 metres, he can run.
A few weeks off before they bring him back to the races again they are not going to over race him which would suggest that the trainers do not consider him to be a natural 2 year old due to his size and anything he does now is a bonus in readiness for a boomer 3 year old season. A definite Jewels contender at Cambridge June 2018.

Major Star just won his second race at Menangle within a week in 1:52.3 which is not bad for a horse that lost his speed on the grass tracks of the North Island. He is in again on Saturday. Any feedback on Park Avenue?

Yeah a nice win by Star , [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] ,  seemed to be going strong at the end which was good to see.Would have appreciated the lesser company after last couple of races in which he never really got into from the back which was not surprising the way the races panned out and the class in the fields, taking on Hectorjayjay and Tiger Tara a bit surprising.
I see though that Star has new owners,Stokie Racing Group and they actually are part owners of Hectorjayjay, wonder what made them decide to buy him,be interesting to know.Racing him in claimers won't make them much money.
Todd McCarthy has driven him a few times,I think the McCarthy boys drive a bit for this stable.

I have just caught up with the video replay of the race and it was nice to see Star pick up another career win. It was a drop in grade from what he has been racing recently and also a step up in the quality of driver. Todd McCarthy was on him and Star appeared to be more relaxed in his hands, he pulled a bit there at one stage but nothing like he does for the lesser known drivers.

Nice win today by Major Star at Menangle. Eased at the start, round to the death seat midrace and too strong in the straight. He was in a claimer for $30,000.

Cyclone Kate and All Black Stride classy enough to make this a rather tough ask of a Major Star if he was in form,1609m also not a help especially if you gonna spend a good part of the race at the wrong end of the field.Stewards said he got a check but I did't see it,seemed to be running home reasonably well on that fast 26.3 last quarter with 2nd last about all to be expected from last on straightening though really hard to gauge where he is at from this race.A little surprised they have not found a little easier race for him from this new stable.

Not having much luck with draws and starting outside of a front line of 10 meant the "restrained at start" stipes comment.Never got into the race from there so a race to forget, jury then still out on his new trainer I guess, just hard to see any positives so far !

Star a nice trial today, finished strongly from the well back for 5th,3.8m behind Little Rascal and Devil Dodger. 1609m Gross Time: 1:55:4 Mile Rate: 1:55:4 [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
First Quarter: 28.6 Second Quarter: 30.7 Third Quarter: 28.1 Fourth Quarter: 28.0
Plenty fast enough trial time for me , not as gut-busting as previous 2.
T P McCarthy driver again, brother to Luke (who drove winner) is he ??.Pulled a bit again maybe to begin with ,not sure but finished of good all the same.

Whats the story Ray with trial times like this, yes Menangle a lightening fast track but surely this is still a bit on the fast side for a trial run.Saw that Tritton and his very good Tin Tin In America horse Devine State settled for a 1:55:6 at the same trials while his other good one ANYTHING FOR LOVE won in 1.52.9 at Menangle recently, that being one of the faster times on the night.
As for Star well doesn't look like his new trainer has found any new tricks to help him, didn't think he looks as well as he did at Gaths and still a handfull for his driver, his pulling sure taking the sting out of his runs. The wide draw as so often turns into settling back,he has certainly shown often enough how keen he gets when that happens, hopefully he can get a few races rolling along in front and dictating, think he still has the odd 1.52 in him and really are not allot of races that that is necessary but yeah the second string tracks probably are his more attractive hunting ground.

Another 1609m trial at Menangle today in an even quicker time of 1:52.9 with sectionals of 28.0 / 29.0 / 28.6 / 27.3.
Unfortunately the same result for Star with a last placing 25.7m behind the winner. The way that the driver was leaning out the back of the cart I take it that Star was not comfortable with the driver or the driving style and pulled his block off and as a consequence was gone when it came to the all important finish.
I cannot see Star as being a competitive Menangle horse - the second string New South Wales tracks maybe, but not the lightening quick Menangle track.

Just watched the video . Saw the time for this race, 1.54.5,thats a dam slick time for a trial and a good bit faster than allot of Star's races.First Quarter: 28.0 Second Quarter: 31.4 Third Quarter: 28.5 Fourth Quarter: 26.6 ,didn't look such a fast 4th quarter with everyone so content to just follow each one to the line that the commentator said "looks like they have another round to go".
Star did get a couple of small reminders to keep up near the end but at the finish was right up on the back of Little Rascal I think it was so albeit last probably more than a good burn out the cobwebs first up run, would think the last quarter time pretty much applied to the whole field and not a time to try and better in a trial.
He was not pushed out the gate so his not unusual rambling beginning ,may have got a little keen early though hard to say and taken over to the rails when last rail-runner pushed out ahead of him and content to stay there.
So hopefully no injury issues, can't say he looked any better than before so curious to see how he performs in his first race for this stable.Found nothing googling this trainer, anyone know anything about him ?.
Driver J E Trainor I thought was Jack,a young kiwi but I might be wrong.
